We only have 4 materials in dentistry:

• Amalgams - A mercury filling, otherwise known as a Silver filling to make you feel better. I would not put that in my family's mouth and therefore choose not to use this restorative option in my office.
  
  
• Plastic - Plastic fillings look good at first, but do not have enough compressive strength and has 3 times the expansion as the tooth. They may be sensitive to cold and they eventually leak. They wear away much faster than teeth and they do not have enough strength so they bend when you chew on them. Since dentists started using them, the root canal rate has increased.
  
  
• Gold - Yellow Gold is an old material. It works well because it is tough and the expansion coefficient is almost the same as the tooth. However, it is difficult to prepare and it requires careful lab procedures to produce a tight casting. Almost nobody uses it now as it looks yellow. Nobody wants a yellow tooth.
  
  
• Cerec - A Ceramic replacement for the tooth that is carved by a computer in 15 mins. After bonding to the tooth, it is stronger than the original enamel. The colour is exceptional. There are no dark lines at the gum as in gold crowns. The natural colour is unmatched by any lab made material. We use it on everything. Best of all. You can have your tooth fixed in 1 hour and eating that day. No temporaries and no waiting for 3 weeks for the lab.
  
  

Advantages of Cerec

Looks like real enamel. Movie stars would be crazy not to get cerecs because they look very natural.

No Sensitivity because it bonds perfectly and expands the same as the tooth. Even switching from hot coffee to ice cream produces no pain.

Lasts a long time. There is very little chance of leakage and we seldom see decay underneath cerecs.
